Some of the most advanced models include remote keyless ignition (RKI) that can start your engine and activate ten electronic accessories.
These systems utilize radio signals that come by your vehicle. These signals are later picked up by a receiver in the key fob. If you place your finger on the door handle or press a button mounted on the handle the key fob transmits its own signal, which is in sync with the one being broadcast by the vehicle's receiver and the doors will unlock.

Many manufacturers have systems that alert you if your key is running out, but they are not foolproof.
Transponder Keys
Transponder keys (also called chip keys) are one of the most well-known types of keys for cars. They operate by using an embedded microchip in the head of the plastic. The microchip transmits a low level signal to the receiver inside your car that only matches the digital serial number programmed by the manufacturer. This prevents unauthorised duplicate keys to ensure that only you are able start your vehicle.
These kinds of keys are more difficult to duplicate and are less likely to get stolen. These keys are more expensive than the flat metal ones, however they can save you lots of money if you find a locksmith who is able to program them into your vehicle.

Throwing them in the water could be hazardous. Some of them also require batteries, which makes them a risk to have around in the house.

key fob programming that is used to unlock certain vehicles. The metal is folded into the plastic body which makes it easier to store and smaller. Mechanical Keys
Modern cars no longer use mechanical keys. Instead, they use an RFID chip embedded in the key to identify the key and connect with the car's systems to start and run. Mechanical keys can unlock the doors as well as the fuel cap, but if it has not been programmed to communicate with the car, it will not start.
The system uses LF (low frequency of 125 kmhz) transmitting antennas inside and outside of the vehicle, which communicate with the smart key. The key will send its unique ID to the car when it is close enough to activate an antenna. The PASE module then verifies the key's ID and turns off the immobilizer to allow the vehicle to be started.
If the battery of the smart keys runs out or fails the mechanical backup is available. For aesthetic reasons, a lot of manufacturers hide the mechanical blade under a cover.
