Driving License Category A2

The category A2 driving licence allows you to drive motorcycles with no sidecar and a maximum engine power of 35 kW. Its power/weight ratio must not exceed 0.2 kW/kg.

This driving licence was designed to let you get your first small motorcycle driving license early and then progress to the A2 licence with more engine power.

Scooters and motorcycles

The second level of motorcycle licence is the driving licence category A2. It allows you to drive small motorcycles (up to 50cc) and mopeds with a maximum cubic capacity of 125cc. This class allows you to gradually increase the engine power of your vehicle, and also to imagine larger engines. The test is more difficult than the first category, and you will need to take more theoretical classes for it.

The category A2 driver's license is valid up to the age of 24. It is valid together with the category A1 car driving licence or as of a provisional driver's licence. If you are older than 24 years old, however, you need a full category A driving licence to operate motorcycles with more than 35 kW.

You can obtain your group A1 licence at 16 years old (in Denmark, Malta, and Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic; in Germany, Hungary, Iceland and in the following countries: Latvia, Lithuania, Italy and Poland). Once you are over the age of 16, you will need to take the A2 category motorbike test. You need to pass this test before the age of 18. After two years you can be upgraded to category A.

After passing the test in the category A2 you are able to drive a motorcycle with or without a sidecar, and vehicles on three wheels that have a power of up to 35 kW. These vehicles must have a weight/power of no more than 0.02 kW/kg. They cannot be derived directly from a vehicle that has twice the maximum power.

If you have passed the two-part examination for a moped or motorcycle that is lower in class since 1st Jul 1996, you can skip the theory exam and only take the practice test. You can ride a small moped or scooter with L plates, or get the new AM licence, which allows you to ride 50cc motorcycles with a maximum speed of 45mph. The AM licence is only valid if you've passed the test in your theory and have completed nine hours of instruction divided into practical and theory lessons at a driving school.

This is a way to get experience driving less powerful two-wheel vehicles before moving up to more powerful machines.
