WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades provide a guaranteed boost to certain stats. Each upgrade boosts the level of an item upgrader kit by 3. A random additional substat is also added to each upgrade.

Upgraded gear generally sees more value in trade, unless it has inherently low requirements (like the FB sorc's shield) or has a high stat variance (like eth titan weapons). Upgrades aren't as valuable for those with lower requirements due to the need to roll the perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader lets players upgrade their gear by offering the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any kind of armor or weapon. The item used to upgrade the item will be consumed and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be applied to enhancements.

You can upgrade your gear anytime by visiting the upgrader in any major city. To ensure that your equipment is up-to-date it is recommended that you visit the upgrader each couple of weeks.

The cost of upgrades will be based on the current level of the item being upgraded, but will always be cheaper than purchasing new gear from other sources. For instance upgrading a chest piece from Benthic to 385 levels will cost 20 recycle points, while buying a similar item from another player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used to improve the quality of weapons, tools, armor, and accessories. They can be bought by players from NPCs who sell upgrades for items in exchange for a variety of currencies, and may also be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be used on any tool, weapon or armor. The button will display a preview of an item upgrading's next upgrade level in the event that there are enough materials.

Upgrade costs differ based on the slot for the item and the current item level. For example weapons cost more than bracers, or gloves. Each upgrade cost 15 Flightstones and a few crests, with some upgrades offering discounts to lower the cost of Flightstones or crests that are used. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain amount it is able to be degraded and sold back to the upgrader for a lower amount of both currency types.

Item upgraders can be found in many places on the main island and some outposts. The NPCs offer an upgrade coupon and the possibility of getting the latest recipe. The upgrade discount increases as more items are upgraded. It can be increased by having players complete certain achievements or complete quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an upgrader for items at the start, unlike Cromwell from Baldur's Gate II. Instead the NPCs that are available to facilitate upgrades are acquired via several methods, which is both an improvement and a drawback.

In Season 3 the upgrade system was modified a bit, and several new features added. Crests

The use of these currencies isn't too complicated however, the system introduces some modifications to the upgrade process. For instance, once an item reaches the highest level of upgrading for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic), it won't require Flightstones to be upgraded. This change is intended to allow players to upgrade their equipment to the highest possible ilvl on all their characters, instead of relying only on seasonal loot.

It's also important to use crests in a wise manner, as they have only one purpose. For instance, it's a good idea use all of your Whelpling-rank crests with the Best item upgrader equipment you have and then keep Drake and Wyrm crests for the next round of upgrades you're planning to create. This is particularly relevant for items like rings and trinkets that occupy multiple slots. The account-wide discount is only applicable when all slots on the character are filled with top-quality equipment.
