Pragmatics and Semantics

A lot of contemporary philosophical theories are based on semantics. For instance, Brandom focuses on linguistic meaning (albeit from a pragmatic perspective).

What is pragmatism?

Pragmatism provides a different perspective to continental philosophy and analytic philosophy. It was initiated by Charles Sanders Peirce. It was extended by his friend and colleague William James, and later developed by Josiah Royce. It was influential in a variety of areas of inquiry that span from philosophy of science to theology, but also found its place in ethics, politics, philosophy of language, aesthetics, and social theory. The pragmatic maxim is at the center of classical pragmatics. It is a rule that clarifies the meaning of hypotheses via their 'practical implications', or their implications for the experience of specific situations. This creates an epistemological viewpoint that is a form of 'inquiry epistemology' based on inquiry, and an anti Cartesian explanation of the rules that govern inquiry. The early pragmatists had a split on whether pragmatism was a scientific philosophy that embraced the view that truth is a monism (following Peirce) or a broad alethic pluralitism (James and Dewey).

A central issue for pragmatist philosophers is understanding knowledge. Certain pragmatists like Rorty tend to be skeptical of any notion of knowledge based on a foundation of 'immediate' experiences. Others, such as Peirce or James, are skeptical of the theory of correspondence, which asserts that the most authentic beliefs are those which accurately represent reality.

While pragmatism is a viable alternative to the analytic and continental philosophical mainstream, it is not without criticism. For instance, some philosophers have argued that pragmatism is merely an expression of deconstructionism, and is not truly an innovative philosophical method.

In addition to these critics pragmatism was challenged by technological and scientific advances. For instance, the pragmatists have struggled to reconcile their views on science with the development of the theory of evolution which was conceived by Richard Dawkins, a non-pragmatist.

Despite these difficulties, pragmatic approach continues to grow in global popularity. It is a third alternative to analytic and Continental philosophical traditions, and has a wide range of practical applications.
